Barn Quilt Driving Tours in Madison County

In many different areas of North Carolina and other states, a heritage project is dotted along the country roads and within the towns–barn quilts. The quilt has been and continues to be an enduring symbol of comfort, family, heritage and community. This project was created as a way to honor the great traditions of our rural county while showcasing its natural beauty. Quilt patterns are selected, painted on wood, and attached to barns, homes, and businesses.

The project got its start in Madison County as part of a grant awarded to the Madison County Arts Council in 2007 and has been growing ever since. Drive through the rural roads using a Barn Quilt Loop Trail Brochure and you will be treated to scenic mountain, rambling rivers and beautiful barn quilts. Some of the barn quilt patterns have been handed down through generations; others are simply beloved.
