The Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre (SART) is dedicated to presenting theatre of the highest professional quality, thereby enriching the Southern Appalachian Region through artistic programming, education, and outreach. SART presents the mainstage summer season of productions each year in the historic Owen Theatre on the campus of Mars Hill University, Mars Hill NC.
Mermaids in Marshall

Great family fun begins around 5:30pm with events centered around a mermaids and pirates’ theme. There is a parade where participants are decked out in their costumes. Restaurants serve special meals in line with the theme. Lots of fun things to do for the whole family. Stores and restaurants stay open late and the evening is capped off with live music.
Madison County Championship Rodeo
Every other Saturday from April through October in Marshall, NC
No competition around the 4th of July weekend
Each month there are two opportunities to watch or participate in a rodeo whichincludes all ages of competitors. Events begin at 7:30pm and even give three to five year-olds a chance to ride a sheep. There’s calf-riding for six to ten year olds, junior bull riding for ten to fifteen year olds as well as team roping barrel racing and, of course, bronco riding. With the focus on kids, there is a dance contest for ages 12 and under at halftime. There are some serious regional and national level competitors to balance out the fun that the amateurs have. Here’s a great chance to see what it’s like to be in a rodeo or to perfect the skills if you are dreaming of a career as a rodeo rider. For information, contact Kenny Treadway at 828 778-8700.
Bluff Mountain Festival

The festival is FREE to the public and features some of the region’s best Traditional Old-Time and Bluegrass Music, ballad singing and clogging followed by an evening Square Dance until dark! Bring the family and the lawn chairs to enjoy a day full of music under the shade trees! This year’s festival will be held on the grounds of the Hot Springs Spa and Resort in Hot Springs, NC.
3rd and 4th of July in Marshall, NC

As an annual event, the Marshall Fire Department brings a rodeo to Madison on the 3rd and the 4th of July for 2 nights. Experience the calf-roping, rodeo bulls, and rodeo clowns and all the other traditional events. Beginning at 8pm on the 4th of July, followed by fireworks. Adults $10 and Children $5. Hot Doggett 100 Bicycle Ride

Mark your calendars now to come join us in July for the Annual HOT DOGGETT 100 and DEVIL’S FORK METRIC CENTURY RIDE and THE BIG LAUREL GRIND. This event is always a great time for all of the riders because of the beauty of the countryside and the friendliness of the volunteers. There are challenging 100 mile and 100 kilometer closed loop courses plus a shorter 35 mile ride. Our 100 mile course covers some of the most scenic and lightly traveled roads anywhere in western North Carolina. Those of you who are seeking a challenge will find it in the 9,600 feet of ascension on that course.

Dog lovers descend upon downtown Marshall with their family pets all dressed up to compete for prizes at this fun event. The pet parade begins around 5:30pm, followed by other events with a dog-centered theme. Restaurants serve special meals in line with the theme. Lots of fun things to do for the whole family. Summer is berry season for fruit lovers and Madison County grows some spectacular blackberries and celebrates them in the annual Blackberry Festival at Ebbs Chapel Community Center. Just minutes off Interstate 26 at Exit #3. You can start your day with blackberry pancakes for breakfast at 8am or buy some jam at one of the booths to take home and eat at a later time. The festival includes craft booths and music provided by local traditional musicians from 9am to 2pm in a beautiful setting.
